PALM DESERT (CNS) – Desert College Internet Service and
colleague portal were restored today following a disruption of the computer network,
with an ongoing investigation, which has blocked student and staff access to
various online services.
The cause of the July 4 outage was unclear, but the college
Information Technology personnel worked with an outside company to help repair the
disruption and called law enforcement to investigate the outage.
“As we were working with our IT, as well as with a third party, it was
necessary to enforce the law,” Robles told CNS. “It’s typical for
situations like this, for our computer network failure.
College officials said they would prioritize the restoration of
services most used by students as part of the resumption of college tiered services
to plan. With this, internet service at all COD campuses was restored and the

“Even students who take online courses still like to come to the
library and use the internet so they can study,” COD spokesperson Nicholas
Robles told the City News Service.
Colleague UI portal allows access to staff to help students
enroll in or drop out of courses, process transcripts and access student records,
but Robles told CNS they are still working to restore student access
portals. COD’s final summer session begins on July 25th, so students have been advised to
contact the college to register for their courses.
The college has set up http://www.CODNews.org so that students can access alternatives
student resources and services that have yet to be restored. Students can
access their course information, counseling services and ask questions via
the temporary website.
Robles said classes were not canceled or impacted and students
not be abandoned due to non-payment of royalties during the interruption.
Faculty, students and staff will receive regular updates via COD
SMS alert system as information becomes available, officials said.
