CLEVELAND – (COMMERCIAL THREAD) – After completing a year or more of distance and hybrid learning due to COVID, a significant portion of traditional school districts are returning to familiar in-person models this school year. Even so, the benefits of e-learning remain clear, especially with around 40 students. In Cleveland, a forward-thinking school network is offering students and their families a one-of-a-kind solution to keeping students up to date with the school content and curriculum they are at risk of missing due to a COVID quarantine.

A new offering called Learning Under Quarantine from Digital ASU preparation, considered for Revolutionary public schools in collaboration with The 305 Education Group, is now in place. To avoid COVID-related learning losses, ASU Prep Digital is providing online instructors to teach Cleveland-area students who miss in-person learning due to a 10-day quarantine. This innovative approach simultaneously increases teaching and learning time, while providing a practical solution for schools that simply do not have the human or financial resources to operate dual models in person and online.

In the 2020-21 school year, Breakthrough – one of Ohio’s most successful public nonprofit charter school networks – only operated remotely. However, for the 2021-2022 academic year, network leaders knew changes were needed.

“Our families overwhelmingly wanted their children to return to school buildings this year, and as educators we believe in-person education is of critical importance at this time to address unfinished learning and social development. and emotional of our students, ”said Tyler Thornton, COO of Breakthrough Public Schools, which serve children in Kindergarten to Grade 8. “At the same time, we recognize that COVID quarantine is a growing reality, and we have a responsibility to keep students engaged and advancing in their education even when they cannot attend school in person. ”

After selecting potential partners to meet this need, Breakthrough Public Schools has partnered with ASU Prep Digital. The PreK-12 online school, developed by Arizona State University, combines easy-to-use technology with a strong curriculum, qualified educators, specific and concurrent college courses, and customizable solutions. Each of these components blend together to create unique formulas (or learning plans / models) that are customized to meet the needs of schools and students, helping them succeed and advance academically.

“We have implemented the Quarantine Learning Model for State-of-the-Art Public Schools to help their cadre reopen, so quarantined students can continue to learn, while easing the burden on teachers and parents,” said said Julie Young, Executive Director of ASU Preparatory Academy and ASU Prep. Digital.

The Learning Under Quarantine model, which began this month, is working in Cleveland’s 12 Schools Breakthrough Network to engage and teach students who need to stay home due to a COVID 10 quarantine policy. days.

“Many schools are looking for an approach that allows them to teach effectively in this still unpredictable COVID environment,” Young said. “At ASU Prep Digital, we have the benefit of a proven online program that empowers schools and students to excel in a non-traditional way. Through an extensive collaborative process, we created this new model of quarantine learning to meet the needs of the Breakthrough student body. We look forward to customizing this offering to meet the needs of more schools that could use this same type of quality educational support.

Learning Under Quarantine is personalized by grade level and extends well beyond packages sent home for students and their families to navigate independently. Students in quarantine at Breakthrough can expect two hours of daily instruction, live, one-on-one, or in a small group, in addition to asynchronous learning activities. Through communication between the student’s teachers and ASU Prep Digital, all material is aligned with the curriculum and network content, allowing students to re-enter the classroom seamlessly, while easing the burden on teachers and parents.

The Quarantine Learning Program has a strong focus on Mathematics and the Arts of the English Language, two areas in which student performance is closely monitored, but also on the foundational subjects that form the basis for all other learning. While parental supervision is expected, especially with younger students who may need an initial introduction to basics like connection, it is not the role of parents to oversee education; ASU Prep Digital educators are on the bridge to fill this role.

“When students miss school, valuable learning opportunities are lost; it can be difficult to catch up with peers after an extended absence, ”Thornton said. “Quarantine learning makes it easier for students to return to class and allows the whole class to continue to progress at a steady pace throughout the year. ”

Thornton and Young both stress that the benefits are not strictly academic; continued engagement outside of the classroom helps students maintain social bonds and interactions, which is severely limited during quarantine. Quarantine learning also helps students get used to learning and discovering new things, so they are better prepared to adjust to the classroom again.

“Ultimately, this innovative offering can help prevent learning gaps and losses not only for Cleveland students, but also for students in schools across the country and around the world facing similar challenges.” Young said. “Staying engaged and learning during quarantine equates to an easier and more successful transition into the classroom. ”

And after

While Learning Under Quarantine is currently operating to support students quarantined in Breakthrough Public Schools, it has the potential to expand to other school districts across the country. ASU Prep Digital plans to adapt the quarantine learning model to more school districts, including one in Arizona.

Although Learning Under Quarantine is the first model of its kind, forging partnerships with local school districts is hardly new to ASU Prep Digital. To date, ASU Prep Digital has established working relationships with more than 1,338 schools and school districts across the country and around the world.
